Zinc-coated steel replaced bronze in the Lincoln cent for 1943 alone, a wartime measure to conserve copper. The Mint returned to a copper alloy the following year, which left one strange silver-colored year in a series that otherwise runs brown from 1909 forward.
These have sold. Steel cents still surface in old jars and folders, and we buy them outright from the public along with everything else in the jar.
