Spanish reales were the hard money of the Atlantic world. Struck in Spain and across its colonial mints, the real and its multiples circulated as the standard silver of the Americas for centuries; the eight-real piece is the piece of eight of the histories, and Spanish silver stayed legal tender in the United States until 1857. St. Augustine was a Spanish town while these were current coin.
