Redeemable once for silver at the Treasury, these certificates carried their promise printed on the face of the note. Congress ended that redemption in the 1960s and the notes went on circulating as ordinary currency, which is why they turn up worn as often as crisp. They are collected now for type, series and signature combination rather than for any claim on metal.
The lot is here in St. Augustine. Notes reward close inspection, so come and go through them at the counter.
