Pearls are one of the few gem materials made by a living animal, formed in nacre layers around an irritant, and the optical effect that makes them glow – light refracting through those translucent layers – is why they read so differently in daylight than under a lamp. They are also soft, around 2.5 on the Mohs scale, which is why the old rule is that pearls go on last, after the perfume, and come off first.
