Emerald is the green variety of beryl, colored by traces of chromium or vanadium, and it is the one major gemstone where inclusions are tolerated rather than penalized – the French call the internal landscape a jardin, a garden, and a flawless emerald is the exception rather than the goal. Emerald also sits lower on the hardness scale than sapphire or diamond, which is part of why it shows up so often in earrings, where a stone takes fewer knocks than it would in a ring.
