Chalcedony is the catch-all name for microcrystalline quartz, the same family that gives us agate, carnelian and onyx. The material has been carved for seals and signets since antiquity because it takes an edge cleanly and polishes to a soft waxy luster rather than a glassy one. In its plain form it runs from milky white to the pale blue-grey that jewelers favor for silver settings, as here in .925.
This ring has sold. Silver rings with natural stones are purchased outright from the public in St. Augustine.
