1916 is the first year of the Walking Liberty half dollar, one of three American coin designs replaced that year in a deliberate push to modernize United States coinage. Adolph A. Weinman put Liberty in mid-stride against a sunrise, wrapped in the flag, laurel and oak in her arm. On 1916 halves the mint mark, where a coin carries one, sits on the obverse below the motto rather than on the reverse where it later moved.
