Proof Indian Head cents were struck apart from circulation coinage, for collectors, using polished dies and specially prepared planchets. This is an 1898 graded NGC PR64 Red Brown, the designation for a copper proof that has kept part of its original mint red while the remainder has mellowed toward brown.
James B. Longacre’s Indian Head design ran from 1859 to 1909, and from 1864 the cents were struck in bronze rather than the earlier copper-nickel alloy. The existing description calls this one stunning for its toning. It is available now in St. Augustine.
