Eight reales, dated 1898. Mexico spent the second half of the nineteenth century moving from the old reales system to a decimal peso, and for years both denominations appeared on coins of the same size and weight – which is why a piece can be described as an 8R and a peso at once without contradiction. The eight reales was the export coin of the era, shipped by the crate into China.
