Toning is what silver does when it is left alone, and this 1891-dated coin has it. Sulfur compounds in air, in paper envelopes and in old album pages react with the surface and lay down a thin film that can run from pale gold through rose and blue to near black. Collectors either chase toning or avoid it entirely; there is very little middle ground.
This piece sold. Toned silver always gets a close look from us, and we buy it outright from the public – bring yours by if you have it.
