An 1890 Morgan dollar, described as dark. Silver dollars that spent decades in canvas Treasury bags or paper envelopes take on color from sulfur in the material, and heavy dark toning is the far end of that process – gunmetal over the fields on a good one, an obscured surface on a bad one. In 1890 all four mints that ever struck Morgans were producing them.
It has since sold. Toned dollars are a category we buy from the public regularly, sight seen.
