Toning is what happens when silver meets sulfur in album pages, cloth bags and paper envelopes over a century: the surface builds a thin film that reads as russet, blue or gold depending on how thickly it formed. This 1878-S Morgan is a toner, and the color is the reason to look at it.
1878-S came out of San Francisco in the first year the Morgan dollar was struck. Toned coins photograph poorly and reward being seen directly, so come by the shop in St. Augustine and turn it in the light.
