First year of the Morgan dollar series, dated 1878. The design exists because of the Bland-Allison Act of that year, which obliged the Treasury to buy millions of dollars of domestic silver every month and coin it into dollars – a political answer to a mining-state problem that filled government vaults with silver dollars almost nobody actually spent. Each one holds 0.7734 troy ounces of silver in a 90 percent alloy.
This example has been sold. Morgan dollars are bought outright from the public here, single coins or full rolls.
