Weighing 1.672 grams and holding roughly .048 troy ounces of gold, the United States gold dollar was the smallest denomination this country ever struck in the metal. This 1874 is PCGS certified and belongs to the Type 3 design, the large Indian princess head used from 1856 until the denomination was discontinued in 1889.
Type 3 gold dollars share their obverse portrait with the three-dollar gold piece Longacre designed in the same period, which is why the two look like a matched pair when they sit together in a case. Come by the St. Augustine shop to see it.
