Capped Bust halves like this 1826 were struck on a screw press from the pre-1837 silver standard of about 89 percent, and their edges carry lettering – FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR – rolled on before striking to discourage clipping. John Reich designed the type in 1807, and it did the heavy lifting as the workhorse silver coin of the young republic.
This one has sold. Early half dollars are bought outright from the public, and we are glad to look at them.
