Copper cents of 1803 were nothing like the modern coin: struck in pure copper at roughly the diameter of a half dollar, they are heavy in the hand and read as a different denomination entirely. The date falls inside the Draped Bust type, which ran from 1796 to 1807. Early copper also wears in its own way – the fields go smooth and chocolate brown long before the date and legends give out – and specialists read that surface as carefully as they read the detail.
