United States gold dollars were struck from 1849 to 1889 and remain the smallest gold coins the country ever issued for circulation – the first type measures just 13 millimeters across, roughly a fingernail. The series ran through three types, the later two enlarged after the original proved too small to handle comfortably. The denomination was a direct product of the California gold rush and the coinage act that followed it.
