Coins, Bars & Rounds

Precious metals come in three main forms. Each has trade-offs depending on whether you prioritize recognition, low premiums, or collectibility.

$

Coins

Legal tender struck by a sovereign government. American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and South African Krugerrands are the most recognized worldwide.

Bars

Produced by private refineries in standard weights from 1 gram to 1 kilo. PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, and Royal Canadian Mint carry the strongest reputations.

Understanding Spot Price & Premiums

Every piece of precious metal has two cost components. Understanding the split is the single most important thing for making smart purchases.

The spot price is the current global market price for one troy ounce of a metal. It changes every few seconds during market hours based on commodities trading worldwide. This is the baseline — no one sells at spot because there are real costs involved in refining, minting, shipping, and selling the physical product.

The premium is what you pay above spot. It covers manufacturing, dealer margin, and supply-and-demand dynamics. Some products carry higher premiums because of collectibility, brand recognition, or limited mintage.

SPOT PRICE Global market rate
PREMIUM Above spot
What the raw metal is worth Set by global commodities markets. Same everywhere in the world at any given moment. Displayed live on our homepage.
Dealer + minting costs Varies by product type, brand, and availability.
Gold spot price (1 oz) $2,650.00
Premium on American Gold Eagle + $125.00 (4.7%)
Your total cost $2,775.00

As a rule of thumb: bars have the lowest premiums, rounds are slightly higher, and government coins carry the highest. But coins also tend to sell back at higher premiums — so the gap often narrows when it's time to sell.

Bars 2 – 4% 8 – 12%
Rounds 3 – 5% 10 – 15%

Authentication & Grading

Counterfeits exist. Professional testing eliminates the guesswork. Here's how we verify every piece that comes through The Vault.

XRF Analysis

X-Ray Fluorescence

A non-destructive test that fires X-rays at the surface and reads the elemental composition. Tells you exactly what the metal is made of — down to the percentage.

  1. 1X-ray beam hits the metal surface
  2. 2Each element emits a unique fluorescent signature
  3. 3Detector reads the spectrum and reports exact composition
  4. 4Results in under 30 seconds — gold, silver, copper, zinc, all identified
Confirms surface composition
Sigma Metalytics

Ultrasonic Verification

Sends electromagnetic waves through the entire piece — not just the surface. Catches sophisticated fakes that pass visual inspection by measuring internal conductivity.

  1. 1Electromagnetic pulse penetrates the full thickness
  2. 2Measures electrical resistivity of the internal metal
  3. 3Compares reading against known pure-metal signatures
  4. 4Detects tungsten cores, plated fakes, and alloy substitutions
Confirms internal integrity
Why we use both tests on every piece XRF confirms the surface composition. Sigma verifies the core. Together, they catch 100% of known counterfeiting methods. Most dealers use one or the other — we run both before anything hits the shelf or ships to your door.
FAQ

Common Questions

Everything first-time buyers ask us — from pricing to authentication to selling back.

Pricing & Premiums
Why does the price I see differ from spot?

Spot is the price for paper contracts on the commodities exchange. Physical metal always trades above spot because someone had to mine it, refine it, mint it into a product, and ship it to a dealer. The difference is the premium.

What's a "good" premium to pay?

For gold bars, 2–4% over spot is typical. Gold coins run 4–7%. Silver premiums are higher percentage-wise — expect 8–15% for bars and 12–20%+ for coins. We show our premium transparently on every product page as a dollar amount and percentage over spot.

Does a higher premium mean I'm getting ripped off?

Not necessarily. Government-backed coins are universally recognized, certain years are scarce, and graded coins carry numismatic value above their metal content. The key is knowing what you're paying for and why.

What is "spot + $X" pricing?

Instead of a flat price, dealers show the current spot price plus a fixed dollar premium. As spot moves, your price moves with it. This is how The Vault prices — you always see the real-time spot component and the premium separately.

Coins, Bars & Rounds
Should I buy coins or bars?

Depends on your goal. If you want the most metal for your money, bars win — they carry the lowest premiums. If you want maximum recognition and liquidity when it's time to sell, government coins like American Eagles are the gold standard (literally). Most experienced stackers own a mix of both.

What's the difference between a round and a coin?

Both are round discs of precious metal, but a coin is legal tender struck by a sovereign government with a face value. A round is privately minted with no face value. Coins generally command higher premiums due to government backing and wider recognition.

What does "1 oz" actually mean?

In precious metals, "oz" means a troy ounce — 31.1 grams. This is heavier than a regular (avoirdupois) ounce, which is 28.35 grams. When you see a gold bar listed as 1 oz, it contains 31.1 grams of gold.

Authentication & Grading
How do I know the metal is real?

We XRF test (X-ray fluorescence) and Sigma test (ultrasonic verification) every piece. XRF confirms surface composition and Sigma verifies internal integrity. Together they catch 100% of known counterfeiting methods. When you buy from The Vault, this testing has already been done.

What about coin grading (MS70, PF69, etc.)?

Grading evaluates a coin's physical condition on a 1–70 scale. A "raw" coin is ungraded. Coins sent to services like PCGS or NGC get authenticated, graded, and sealed in a tamper-proof holder ("slab"). Higher grades command higher premiums. For pure bullion stacking, grading isn't necessary — but for numismatic coins, it directly impacts value.

Can I bring my own metals in for testing?

Absolutely. Walk into our St. Augustine location and we'll test your pieces on the spot — no purchase necessary. It's one of the advantages of buying from a local dealer with professional equipment.

Buying & Selling
Can I sell my metals back to The Vault?

Yes. We buy gold, silver, platinum, and palladium — coins, bars, rounds, and jewelry. Walk in or contact us for a quote. Our buy prices are based on the current spot price and we'll test everything on site so you get a fair, transparent offer.

Do I have to buy a full ounce?

Not at all. We carry fractional gold (1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz) and silver in various weights. Fractional pieces cost more per ounce in premiums but they're a great way to start or to keep your options flexible.
